UC Riverside professor of computer science Michalis Faloutsos has received a $1.5 million grant as part of a new initiative by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. The project, which has already enlisted the aid of 30 other university and industrial labs, aims at analyzing network systems to better predict their development. The $1.5 million will be dispersed over a period of 5 years and can be renewed after the end of the term.

Faloutsos will be working in one of four research centers which collectively form the Network Science Collaborative Technology Alliance (NS CTA). According to Faloutsos, the NS CTA "will be the world-leading research organization in the new field of network science." Of the research centers which share similar tasks to that of Faloutsos's, all but one will have the role of analyzing network information. The fourth center, the Raytheon BBN Technologies headquarters, serves to combine the results generated by the other centers. Ultimately, the information received by Raytheon BBN Technologies headquarters will be sent to the Department of Defense.

Dr. Faloutsos summarizes his own role as that of "integrating and guiding the research across the center on understanding fundamental properties of large complex systems, such as communication networks, human interactions, online and web-based communities, and developing methods to model and predict their evolution."

In his work here at UC Riverside, Dr. Faloutsos's research is centered around network security (such as URL hijacking and intrusion detection), peer to peer networks, and routing of various forms. Among some of his recent accomplishments are included the development of new methods of detecting fraudulent websites and classifying network applications.
